Since Apple won’t add copy and paste on the iPhone or iPod Touch someone else had to implement something to take care of copy and paste. ℏClipboard allows the end user to copy and paste text. I’ve tested it on the Notes app, Mail app, and Safari app and it works beautifully. Makes the iPhone experience much better and easier.

Introduction from the project’s website:

ℏClipboard is a global copy and paste solution for the iPhoneOS 2.2 based on iKeyEx.

To Install:

1. Open Cydia
2. Download and Install ℏClipboard from Cydia (BigBoss Repo)
3. Open the Settings app and go to General -> Keyboard -> International -> and turn on the ℏClipboard

Thanks Ecko for the tip!

One of the main limitations on the iPhone for making VOIP calls is you can’t make calls via 3G/EDGE/GPRS only Wi-Fi. VOIPover3G is a little iPhone Hack that will allow the user to make VOIP calls over 3G, EDGE or GPRS on a VOIP application such as Fring.

From the developer:

This MobileSubstrate library can trick any application into thinking that it is on Wifi even though it is on a cellular data connection. There are a lot of possible uses for that, but for me the main use is being able to use VoIP programs like Fring over 3G. You can configure what apps get tricked by adding the app’s bundle identifier to “/Library/MobileSubstrate/DynamicLibraries/VoIPover3G.plist”. Currently, the default is to trick only appstore and fring. If you remove or rename the VoIPover3G.plist ALL applications will be tricked. This is not recommended though, because for a lot of apps its makes sense to know whether they are on wifi or 3G.

VOIPover3G is free and it’s available in Cydia. - Pays off to have your iPhone Jailbroken, eh?

Despite all the anticipation for turn by turn GPS navigation on the iPhone, an application that does just that already exists on the AppStore. XRoad Co.’s G-Map U.S. West and G-Map U.S. East apps were released back in October and January. The application seemed to slip under Apple’s strict radar and got published on the AppStore.

The G-Map application is the first on-board GPS navigation solution to be made available for iPhone and iPod Touch download. This cutting-edge GPS-enabled application features an intuitive user interface with functions essential to the mobile consumer. Unlike other network mobile navigation services, there is no monthly fee involved and it makes instant route guidance without interruption. No internet or wi-fi connection needed to get you to the desired destination.

I instantly got intrigued by the application and put it to the test. I tested it on my iPhone 3G and drove around town for awhile and it works almost flawlessly. The application provides turn-by-turn directions (distance countdown to each turn) by way of GPS. Local points of interest (Food, Fuel, etc.) can be found, addresses can be searched, routes can be edited, detours added, and types of roads can be avoided (highways, toll roads, etc.). If a turn is missed, the route is recalculated. The application is said to even provide 3D images of major intersection, I am unable to confirm it actually does. Despite everything the application does flawlessly, voice prompts are no where to be found to let you know what street to turn to without having to look at the iPhone screen.

Weighing at a hefty 800-900MB, you need some serious free space to be able to install this application, all the maps are built-in onto the application so if you drive into a town where you have absolutely no Wi-Fi, EDGE or 3G then you can still get your maps without driving around without directions.

Each region costs $19.99 USD (East US - iTunes link or West US - iTunes link) - A Europe version is coming soon

G-Map is available on the AppStore:

iBluetooth is a neat application that will allow the end-user to transfer files to and from their computers to an iPhone - Hell yeah! you heard right! Bluetooth transfer on iPhone! MeDevil, the creator of iBlueTooth has come final bug squashing to do and this app will be released.

Apple currently does not allow an app such as iBluetooth to do this (Stupid Apple) so don’t expect this app to be made available on the AppStore, this application will be most likely released on Cydia.

Stay tuned! We’ll let you know when this hits Cydia!

TV.com has released a application on the App Store and if you’re in the US you can stream full TV shows and clips of TV shows right on your iPhone or iPod Touch! TV Shows available for full episode streaming include: CSI: Miama, NCIS, Star Trek: The Original Series and more. The video quality isn’t great, it’s sort of YouTube video quality… yeah, crappy quality but it’s very much watchable. You can stream this video via Wi-Fi (obviously), 3G, or even EDGE which is awesome if you like waiting a couple of hours to load 5 seconds of video.

I wish they had some of the more popular and cooler shows avialble for full episode streaming, such as The Office (It’s not even on the list and it’s understandable since this app is from CBS), My Name is Earl (again, not even on the list), Ghost Whisperer, The Big Band Theory, Weeds and etc. but they sadly don’t.

Despite Amazon having a Kindle and recently releasing Kindle 2, they released a free Kindle application for the iPhone! Yay, that’s great news for those that can’t afford a Kindle or for those who don’t want a Kindle for whatever reason. You can get that Kindle experience everyone loves right on your iPhone — No kindle required!

From Amazon:

Kindle for iPhone allows Apple iPhone and iPod touch owners to read Kindle books using a simple, easy-to-use interface. You can shop for hundreds of thousands of books at www.amazon.com/kindlestore, and wirelessly transfer the books to your iPhone or iPod touch. Enjoy Amazon’s low prices on Kindle books, including New York Times Best Sellers and most new releases for $9.99, unless marked otherwise.

With Kindle for iPhone, you can:

* Buy a Kindle book from your Mac, PC, or iPhone using a Web browser and wirelessly transfer the books to your iPhone
* Read first chapters of any book for free before you buy
* Download the Kindle books you already own for free — they are automatically backed up on Amazon.com
* Adjust the text size, add bookmarks, and view the annotations you created on your Kindle device

Kindle for iPhone also includes Whispersync, which allows you to seamlessly switch back and forth between your Kindle device and Kindle for iPhone while keeping your bookmarks and reading location synchronized between devices. Now you can easily pick up reading right where you left off on your Kindle or iPhone.
Books you purchase can also be read on Kindle and Kindle 2, Amazon’s portable readers that wirelessly download books, newspapers, magazines, and blogs to a crisp, high-resolution 6-inch electronic-paper display that looks and reads like real paper.

Being able to read the first chapter is a huge deal for a lot of people, usually. It’s basically like watching the pilot of a TV show series - If you don’t like the pilot, you most likely will not like the rest of the series. Also, being able to re-download books you previously purchase is f@#$ing awesome!

Cydia developer, Jay Freeman also known as Saurik has released a new version of Cydia that sports essentially an AppStore clone. It’s called Cydia Store. It’s where iPhone/Touch developers can get money from their unofficial third-party jailbreak applications. The first paid package to be released on Cydia Store is Cyntact. It’s a simple app that shows profile pictures in the contact list. It’s priced at $1.00USD at the Cydia Store.

Based off his twitter updates, he plans to add PayPal support sometime next week. He also plans to convert cydia from a package repository to a full fledged app store with an integrated payment system. He also does not plan to charge more than the 30% commission that Apple charges developers

He opened the store for unofficial AppStore developers like himself to make money from their efforts. He says “The overworking goal is to provide choice. It’s understandable that [Apple] wants to control things, but it has been very limiting for developers and users.”

WSJ reports that Freeman, who has been on the lookout daily for email from Apple lawyers, isn’t taking any chances and has lined up a lawyer in case Apple takes legal action.

Details via Freeman’s twitter:

* Direct credit card processing in the future.
* The purchase is tied to your Cydia account on the server, so even if you buy a new iPhone you will be able to install it on your new device.
* Cyntact is DRM-free. Freeman plans to work with the existing commercial applications to handle their current DRM.

Open up Cydia to update!

What do you guys think of this idea? - Personally, I’m excited. More apps will become more stable and better and will be worth every cent. For those who haven’t yet jailbroken their iPhones: What are you waiting for? Do it already! You’re missing out on a ton of awesome stuff.

A voice navigation GPS app for the iPhone has been in huge demand by a lot of people including myself. Well, like 90% of the time, an unofficial iPhone developer has developed what Apple hasn’t — xGPS — It features voice navigation — sounds like Steve Hawkings is giving you directions to your destination — but it works. You can download a specific area from Google Maps from the application to be used offline or to be used where you wont have internet access - awesome, right?

From the limited tests I’ve done, I can safely say this app kicks ass! It works really good. It’s pretty stable and it’s pretty accurate. Sometimes you’re driving down a street and then the application tells you you’re going the wrong way when you’re not and it can get pretty annoying but after a few seconds it corrects itself. The voice nav works but its a little hard to understand. I wish it had Mac OS X’s Alex voice which sounds awesome and like a real person talking, but it doesn’t perhaps in future version of xGPS. - Overall, this is an awesome application that’s worth having for any iPhone 3G user (or iPhone 2G user)

xGPS Screenshot xGPS Screenshot xGPS Screenshot xGPS Screenshot xGPS Screenshot

There’s also a desktop application to download the maps to your pc/mac and to view the GPX data

xGPS is available in Cydia and it’s free! yes, free.

Apple highlighted the iPhone and the upcoming iPhone 3.0 firmware update today in a live event in the Apple campus in Cupertino, CA. Some of these features are freaking awesome!

* In-App Purchasing: Allows developers to sell additional content from within applications. Highlighted uses include magazine subscriptions, eBooks, additional levels and items for games.
* Peer-to-Peer Connectivity: Find other devices running the app via Bonjour over Wi-Fi of Bluetooth. Good for gaming, but also other applications for sharing data.
* Third-Party Accessory Apps: Allowing accessory manufacturers to create applications to interface with their hardware accessories.
* Push Notification: Rather than using background processes that hamper battery life, utilize third-party server to push badge, text, and audio alerts from applications.
* Turn by Turn: Apple will allow developers to use CoreLocation for turn-by-turn GPS directions.
* Cut, Copy and Paste: Available across all apps. Shake to undo or redo.
* Landscape keyboard: Available in all key applications, including Mail.
* MMS: Picture messaging now available.
* Voice Memos: Record notes, lectures, interviews, etc.
* Spotlight Search: Available across all applications. Systemwide search available from main home screen by flicking to the left.
* A2DP Bluetooth: Support for stereo bluetooth headsets.

You might notice that tethering is no where to be found in that list, it was addressed in the Q&A section of the event. Apple is building the client side of tethering into OS 3.0, but cooperation from carriers is also required in order for it to be offered.

The iPhone 3.0 update is available to all registered iPhone Developers as a free beta today and it will be fully released this summer. Shame that Apple dropped the details on this amazing update and are making us wait a couple of months before it releases! This update will be free to all iPhone users and as always, it will be $9.95USD for iPod Touch users.
Some of the above features will sadly not make it to the first generation iPhone (iPhone EDGE/2G) because of hardware limitations. The features that wont make it include, MMS and stereo bluetooth. So if you got an iPhone 2G go upgrade! Apple also revealed that bluetooth support can be activated for the second generation iPod Touch.

Apple has posted an iPhone OS 3.0 Preview page listing a few of the highlights. A video of today’s media event will also be posted to the page later today.

The folks at Ars Technica are reporting that further evidence of future unreleased hardware is lurking around in the latest iPhone 3.0 beta software update. While exploring the unknowns of the iPhone 3.0 updated system files, a developer discovered references to two new iPhone models and what appears to be another iPod Touch model. Two other unknown pieces of hardware are also referenced as “iProd” and “iFPGA.”

The mystery devices, iPhone2,1, iPhone3,1, iPod3,1, iFPGA, and iProd0,1, are named in the “USBDeviceConfiguration.plist” property list found in /System/Library/AppleUSBDevice/. Also named in that list are the current iPhone and iPod models.

Ars Technica’s Chris Foresman explains:

In addition to these references [to current models], USBDeviceConfiguration.plist in iPhone OS 3.0 beta contains references to iPhone3,1; iPod3,1; iFPGA; and iProd0,1. All of the products are assigned unique productID numbers, though all are assigned a productString of iPhone. These details are reported to Mac OS X when the devices are plugged in via USB, and would show up in System Profiler, for instance.

Boy Genius is also reporting similar information:

“Apple normally makes their device IDs in chronological order, from first released to last released. Here is what I found very interesting for you. Quick, here is an example of the past devices:
iPhone First Gen - 0×1290
iPod touch 1G - 0×1291
iPhone 3G - 0×1292
iPod touch 2G - 0×1293
Then, here is what is found in the ramdisk:
iPhone2,1 - 0×1294
iProd0,1 - 0×1295
iPod2,2 - 0×1296
iPhone3,1 - 0×1297
iFPGA - 0×1298
iPod3,1 - 0×1299?

If anything new arises we’ll be sure to let you know!

A developer has managed to hack his way into getting USB tethering to work on the recently release iPhone 3.0 beta - He claims he was “hacking around” with some carrier bundle files and iPhone 3.0 and somehow managed to activate the tethering preferences, that’s some epic iPhone Hacks! Not only is that epic but he was successful on tethering his iPhone 3G to his laptop! If you don’t know what tethering is, it’s a feature that allows you to share your iPhone’s internet connection with your laptop, but has not been allowed up until iPhone 3.0

Based on the images above, it appears you’ll not only have the options for USB Tethering but also bluetooth! Pretty awesome, eh? Sadly, the developer doesn’t know what he did exactly to enable this feature. Very sad, indeed. Apple had admitted tethering capabilities were built in into the iPhone 3.0 firmware but had not yet coordinated with mobile carriers. Very clever iPhone 3G Hacks and developer!

Of course, one of the biggest complaints about the iPhone is that it doesn’t have a very good camera inside. Sure, it comes in handy when taking a snap shot of where you parked or a picture of that beautiful landscape when you forgot your camera at home but the quality of that image is very bad unless you’re in very good lighting conditions. Many people have demanded atleast a 5 megapixel sensor on the iPhone and by the looks of it, Apple has listened and the next generation iPhone will have a 5 megapixel camera sensor, atleast we hope.

Digitimes claims Apple has places orders with OmniVision Technologies for both 3.2 and 5 megapixel camera sensors. The 3.2 megapixel is reported to be used in the next generation iPhone (iPhone 4G?) and the 5 megapixel is reported to be used in a separate product launching later this year.

OmniVision has received 3.2-megapixel CMOS image sensor (CIS) orders for Apple’s next-generation iPhone, according to market sources. The company is also said to have secured 5-megapixel CIS orders for another Apple product expected to be launched later in the year.

A 3.2 megapixel image sensor on the next generation iPhone isn’t a huge improvement in terms of megapixels but hey, it’s something right? We just hope the image quality is that of a $8,000USD Nikon D3 - One can only dream, right?

Since the release of the iPhone 3.0 beta, developers have been digging through the firmware looking for evidence of future iPhone models and capabilities. An early find revealed a number of unknown iPhone model numbers. And then, new findings that added two new features to the next generation iPhone.

Driver support for a new Broadcom Wi-Fi chipsets suggest that the next generation iPhone will support 802.11n. Which will certainly be a huge upgrade from what typical smartphones (Including the iPhone) have, which is 802.11b or 802.11g which are significantly slower than 802.11n WiFi.

Remember, the iPhone 3.0 firmware will be released to the public this summer, and it’s rumored that Apple will release the next generation iPhone, perhaps iPhone 4G, in the same timeframe. Lets cross our fingers and pray!

More findings on the iPhone 3.0 firmware! How about a possibility of Video Recording on the iPhone? This screenshot was discovered in the latest iPhone 3.0 beta, it shows the interface Apple will provide for video recording.

The screenshot shows the interface of what could be in the next generation iPhone. The interface has a switch toggle to switch between the still photography camera or the video recording camera. At the moment, the video recording feature is not functional and the interface is not accessible by default. This interface will only appear after configuration files are modified telling the firmware that the video camera is present.

Other interesting capabilities found in the configuration files include “auto-focus camera”, “magnetometer” (digital compass), and “Voice Control”.

Well, the cat is out of the bag. The 3.0 firmware from Apple can be jailbroken, and there are now sites out there giving you that jailbreak (after you sort through various ads and browser popups, etc).

Of course it’s not really a surprise that it can be jailbroken. One of the nicest things about the jailbreaking iPhones and iPod Touches nowadays is that once a given device can be jailbroken, it can always be jailbroken. The exploits we’re forced to resort to are down at the hardware level, where nothing can be done about them via software. That’s why within a day or two of 3.0 beta1’s release we were able to snap this screenshot of a jailbroken system:

(we also captured the date of the SHA1 of the above image for historical purposes here and here)

Why did we not release the jailbreak two weeks ago when the above image was captured and hashed? There are many reasons, mostly resource-related:

1. We don’t want to have to release a new version of PwnageTool and QuickPwn for every beta release. Last time around during the 2.0 beta period, there were nine (9!) Apple releases, spaced within a few weeks of each other.
2. There are unresolved problems that we’re still working on. It’s currently impossible to get the 3.0 firmware to talk to baseband 02.28 where yellowsn0w lives, for instance.
3. We don’t want to have to support everyone who wants to back down from the betas…because the betas are, well, buggy.
4. It’s silly to play cat&mouse with Apple during a beta period, when relatively few people are willing to actually use the beta software in their everyday lives. There are ways Apple can tighten the screws, and we’d rather not burn methods just for a beta release.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ABOUT THE UNOFFICIAL QUICKPWN RELEASES IS THAT IF YOU USE THEM, YOU WILL KILL YELLOWSN0W, POSSIBLY FOREVER. That’s because QuickPwn, by its very nature, requires you to already have accepted Apple’s official IPSW, along with its baseband update. If you do that, you will (possibly forever) lose your ability to software-unlock your iPhone 3G.

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and so perhaps we should be flattered that so many ad-supported sites are now using our own tools to create unofficial jailbreaks (QuickPwn in particular is so easily adapted from one release to the next that it’s reduced to a handful of binary pattern searches in a good hex editor). But please don’t expect support for them on this blog, because we’re actually busy with the hard part of the 3.0 jailbreak (the 02.28 incompatibility and the new compressed ramdisk they’re using).

Oh, and also the unlock :)

Various sources are reporting that buried in the iPhone 3.0 OS is evidence of voice control features that are codenamed “Jibbler,” as well as synthesized voice responses from the phone, like the new iPod shuffle.
It looks like Jibbler is an “enhancement” to the iPhone’s SpringBoard app - the essentially invisible app that manages the homescreen and launches applications - and might be controlled by the headset. Unlike the Shuffle, which lets your computer do all of the synthesizing work to talk to you, the
iPhone would handle it in real time, apparently.

Hello, voice dialing - and if the voice control APIs make it to the SDK - voice Twittering, no more separate apps required at all. It could be a whole new world for the iPhone in terms of control. Maybe in the future gestures, buttons, etc. will all be a thing of the past (maybe not in the very near future, but it doesn’t appear too far away).

We’ll keep an eye on this story as it develops.

If you are interested in an app for the iPhone/Touch that can edit both Microsoft Word and Excel documents along with file sharing and content management capabilities, Quickoffice is now available via the App Store for $20.

This is basically an abridged version of Office for the iPhone, which could useful for a variety of applications: editing documents, typing out new ones, and doing Excel sheets without dragging open a laptop. Will include copy/paste functionality too. Great for on the go presentations.

Comments on various forums think the price is too high, but hey, people were clamoring for this functionality months ago, so compared to the full on version of Office, $20 is a bargain, it seems. But the bar seems to have been set rather low for App Store pricing it seems, and many have said they’d rather piece together various free apps to do this sort of work. To each their own, we suppose.

Evidence of new voice control features coming to iPhone OS 3.0 have been discovered, according to an Ars Technica report. The technology is apparently called "Jibbler," and likely will provide not just voice synthesis but also voice recognition.

Jibbler appears be an enhancement to the iPhone SpringBoard application, the Finder-esque app that acts as a launcher and will support the newly announced 3.0 Spotlight search. Jibbler may be controlled via the iPhone headset—button squeezes could be used to record short voice segments from the user, which Jibbler will then interpret. Voice synthesis can then be used to give the user a response, similar to the latest generation iPod shuffle, which can "read" playlists and track names—the difference being that the iPhone hardware itself could handle real-time voice synthesis.

Ars sources found references to classes and methods named VSSpeechSynthesizer, VSRecognitionSession, SBVoiceControlDisableHandlerActions, SBSensitiveJibblerEnabled, and SBVoiceControlSoundCompletion. Its possible that Apple may allow access to these services via the official SDK.

Its still unknown whether the new voice services will be tied to the expected hardware update in June or whether they will work on current iPhone models.
